The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is usually taken to enter a college or university.

The test is available in two formats, namely paper-based test (PBT) and next generation computer-based test (iBT). The latter is not yet available at every test center.

The iBT test includes four sections, namely reading, listening, speaking and writing. For the reading part you are given 60-100 minutes and it involves 3-5 passages with 12-14 questions each. Listening takes 60-90 minutes and covers 4-6 lectures with 6 questions each and 2-3 conversations with 5 questions each. Speaking takes 20 minutes and covers 6 tasks, 2 independent and 2 integrated. Writing  involves 1 integrated task and 1 independent task and lasts for 50 minutes.

As for the paper-based test, it covers listening comprehension with the time limit of 30-40 minutes, structure and written expression (25 minutes), reading comprehension (55 minutes) and writing a topic (30 minutes).

The prices of taking TOEFL test is different in various countries. For instance, in the US it costs $150.

There are a number of TOEFL exams books you may consider to prepare for the test. Consider Longman Preparation Course for the TOEFL Test: Next Generation (iBT) with CD-ROM and Answer Key. It provides students with all the necessary tools.  It features a comprehensive language skills course as well as practice for all sections of the test.

The material available on the CD-ROM varies from the book and covers practice sections for all parts of the test, including speaking, eight mini-tests, and two complete tests, pop-up explanations for all items on the CD-ROM and easy-to-use scoring.

Speaking covers personal, expository tasks and integrated tasks, and writing includes expository and integrated tasks. Llistening features conversations and academic lectures, and reading covers practice exercises.
