New Student-Assignment Plan Expects Louisville District
Jefferson Country Public Schools in Louisville, Kentucky, is proposing a new student-assignment plan to Louisville District.
Education Week reports that the plan will maintain racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic diversity in local schools.
Seven months after its student-assignment plan was struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court, the Jefferson County, Ky., school district has proposed a new system that it hopes will maintain racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic diversity in its schools without running afoul of the law.
New York Times.com quotes John G. Roberts, the associate justice of the Supreme Court, commenting on the plan.
“Such programs were directed only to racial balance, pure and simple, a goal was forbidden by the Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection. The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race.”
A final proposal will be presented to the school board by May, and after the board’s final approval, the plan will be implemented starting for the 2009-10 academic year.
