New Student-Assignment Plan Expects Louisville District

New Student Assignment Plan Expects Louisville DistrictJefferson Country Public Schools in Louisville, Kentucky, is proposing a new student-assignment plan to Louisville District.

Education Week reports that the plan will maintain racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic diversity in local schools.

Seven months after its student-assignment plan was struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court, the Jefferson County, Ky., school district has proposed a new system that it hopes will maintain racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic diversity in its schools without running afoul of the law.

New York Times.com quotes John G. Roberts
, the associate justice of the Supreme Court, commenting on the plan.

“Such programs were directed only to racial balance, pure and simple, a goal was forbidden by the Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection. The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race.”

A final proposal will be presented to the school board by May, and after the board’s final approval, the plan will be implemented starting for the 2009-10 academic year.
