Chinese Police Drag Parents From Protest
Around 100 parents have gathered outside a courthouse, holding the pictures of their dead kids and shouting their names. The Chinese police had to forcefully remove the angry parents from the courthouse.
ABC News reports that the police action was the clearest signal yet that authorities are hardening their stance against the impromptu displays of public anger over the May 12 earthquake that collapsed schools and killed thousands of children.
The students’ deaths have become the focus for Chinese, both inside and outside the quake zone, fueling accusations about corruption in school construction. The brewing public anger has become a political challenge and threatens to turn popular sentiment against the authoritarian government as it copes with aiding millions displaced by the disaster.
According to USATODAY, the parents had been kneeling in front of the courthouse yelling, “We want to sue!”
The government says the May 12 earthquake destroyed 7,000 classrooms. Many parents have accused contractors of cutting corners when building the classrooms, resulting in schools that could not withstand the 7.9-magnitude quake. Pictures of collapsed schools surrounded by buildings still standing have fueled anger.
Hopefully, the time will soothe the pain and anger of Chinese people along with the agony of whole world.
