Education Forum ‘The Star’ Throws Final Punches of 2011
The SSU (Sonoma State University) school newspaper ‘The Star’, seemingly always striving to stir the pot of the education forum it inhabits, distributed its final edition for the year on the campus grounds. A few weathered editions may yet be had as this blog post goes net.
They feature the overstressed learning resources of the State of California and beyond. After honoring a three decades long professor, a school president and the local mayor on page one, page two dispenses the dirt that makes The Star so interesting.
The education forum heats up with the burning effects of ongoing budgetary concerns. The state run school is at critical over–capacity. The continued educational well-being of those that rely on the outstanding learning resources available at SSU is therefore at risk.
An editorial describes the student overpopulation and the inability of the school to cope therewith. Decrying increased class sizes, student costs and decreased availability of course selection, the education forum shines the spotlight on an imperiled school system. A letter to the editor exposes an unfair and inefficient waiting list system.
Page 3 begins with a call to a new New Deal mentality to address the current exorbitant rate of unemployment hidden by the usual glossed-over statistics. The Guest Contributors encourage jobs creation programs like those administered during the depression.
Page 4 features an article about how the SSU Associated Students Incorporated organization voted to encourage peaceful protests on campus. By adopting a resolution encouraging free speech, they wish to reinforce the students’ rights to assembly and peaceful demonstrations as an extension to their inherent constitutional rights and privileges.
