Intel Science Award Goes To North Carolina High School StudentHigh School Senior Shivani Sud has won a $100,000 scholarship in the Intel Science Talent Search for her project on colon cancer. As soon as computer chip manufacturer Intel and the Society for Science & the Public announced the names of the two winners in the contests at their gala in Washington, Indian-American Sud took home several honors along with the first prize.

Sud submitted a bioinformatics and genomics project to the Intel contest, that focused on defining stage II colon cancer. In her project, Sud first analyzed the public data that had studied 125 patients before developing models of effective treatment.

Rediff News reports that Sud is the first in her class of 358 at Charles E Jordan High School in North Carolina.

She is a Teen Court student attorney, a Durham Rescue Mission volunteer and performs classical and modern Indian dance. Sud plans to attend Princeton or Harvard, earn an MD/PhD and have a career in research.

According to The New York Times, all 10 finalists of the contest received laptops and $5,000 scholarships. The paper also quotes Sud sharing her feelings and excitement about winning the contest.

“I was wobbly, waiting for them to announce the top 10. I was sitting on the tip of my chair.”
