New President For Harvard Management Company
Jane Mendillo has been appointed as the new president of the Harvard Management Company. Mendillo, who has had different positions at Harvard for over 15 years, plans to stay at the company for a long time.
MarketWatch reports that the Harvard Management Company has the largest university endorsement of $35 billion.
Harvard University said Thursday it selected Jane Mendillo as the new president and chief executive of Harvard Management Company effective July 1. Since February 2002, Mendillo has served as chief investment officer of Wellesley College.
Mendillo is the first woman endowment manager to take this office, but she is not new in this field. Mendillo has been successful at Wellesley, where the total endowment grew to $1.7 billion last year, from $1 billion in 2002.
According to The New York Times, thanks to her working experience, Mendillo has a very strong familiarity with investment approach, and her appointment promises a very bright future for the company.
Ten years ago, just 2 of the nation’s 25 largest endowments were run by women. With Ms. Mendillo’s appointment, that number has jumped to six. The university’s decision was greeted with enthusiasm by people who have worked with her and in the endowment world in general.
