NY Bans Linking Test Scores With Tenure

The Assembly in New York has passed a bill to ban city and other school districts linking tenure with the test score results of students. In order to decide on teachers tenure, the State legislation requires schools to follow the standards of the Board of Regents.

The Times Herald Record reports that New York City already has a plan to pay teachers bonuses that dramatically improve student test scores.

The city also has a study under way to measure how much individual teachers improve the scores of their students. The scores could eventually be linked to performance evaluations “the key to pay hikes” and tenure and possibly made public, according to press reports.

According to The New York Times, thanks to this bill, teachers will be measured on how well they use student performance data to shape their instruction.

The paper also quotes the spokesperson for Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s legislative office speaking about the importance of the bill and its role in education system.

“To make sure kids have the best possible teachers, we need to look at all available data. Teachers should be accurately evaluated with information about how well they’re helping students learn. We cannot afford to restrict the city’s ability to set high standards.”
