Yale Student Accused Of Lying On His Application

Yale Student Accused Of Lying On His ApplicationAkash Maharaj, a former Yale undergraduate student, has been accused of lying on his admission application. Maharaj’s application turned out to be false.

Instead, Maharaj submitted documents of an outstanding scholar from Columbia University when he was transfered to Yale with a full scholarship of $32.000. In addition to the scholarship, Maharaj also received $15,000 in federal scholarships and loans.

He now faces charges of larceny and forgery.

The New York Times reports that Yale Admission Officials delved into Maharaj’s records and found out that he was not a student at Columbia. Moreover, now only were official transcripts false, but so too was his age on the application.

Security experts also voiced concern about a student being able to obtain an official transcript form. They said that many colleges used paper with watermarks and embedded metal strips, and that accessing such paper was like a counterfeiter’s being able to obtain the special paper used for printing money.

According to Msnbc.com, Maharaj is accused of submitting a fake transcript and a letter of recommendation from Columbia University.

A former Yale student has been charged with deceiving the Ivy League school to gain admission. For about a year, Akash Maharaj lived in Morse College, a residential college at Yale University. He is no longer enrolled.

A case of fake application is rare at Yale University and Maharaj is due to appear in Connecticut’s Superior Court in New Haven early on Monday morning.
