How To Master New Learning Styles And Strategies
We all have our own learning styles and strategies which work best for us. But sometimes situations occur, in which our dominant learning style isn’t enough to get sufficient information.
For example, if you are a visual learner, you will get less information during an oral lecture than your auditory learner classmates do. You will lose many learning opportunities if you remain constrained into the frames of just one learning style. Fortunately, this can be easily avoided. Learning to learn is perhaps the most valuable skill for a student, and by using it you can learn almost anything.
Here are some steps you can follow to learn new learning styles and strategies:
1.Although you surely have a general idea of your learning style you need to determine it more precisely. Do some research, read about styles, there are also tests to determine your learning style. After you’ve determined yours, examine other learning styles. For example, if you are a visual learner, read how auditory learners absorb information.
2.Organize activities, during which you will have to behave like a person with a different learning style. Study in new ways, which are not typical for you. You need to get out of your comfort zone and achieve new territories. Listen to lectures on CDs, when reading a text try to connect it with certain objects or feelings, make notes. Make a list of different learning styles and strategies and try them all in your learning practice.
3.Pair with someone who has a different learning style. Examine how that person learns and try to do the same. It is best to work in couples when you are learning to learn. After spending some time with your partner you will see that you have mastered his learning style, and it has now become your property.
Of course you will best succeed when you use your strengths, but it is also very important to work on your weaknesses to achieve better results.
