Summer Programs For High School Students: Part 4
There is a great variety of summer programs for high school students and volunteer summer programs are among them. They may be in different parts of the world, but I want to draw your attention to volunteerism in Africa.
Many schools and colleges in the US require high school students to participate in various volunteer programs. At first many students do not like this aspect of their education, but they feel a kind of satisfaction and pride after looking back and analyzing what they have done.
The East Africa Conservation and Community Expedition organizes five or ten weeks of volunteer life in Kenya, East Africa. Kenya volunteering is a rare opportunity to take advantage of three different aspects of volunteerism in different towns of Kenya: marine research, forest research and community development.
Knowledge of foreign languages or previous experience are not among the required qualifications, but the volunteers should be capable of working as a member of a team, and the rustic life of Africa should not frighten them.
The cost of a five-week program is $3150 and for ten weeks you pay $5170. Food and accommodation, 24-hour in-country support, national park fees and permits are included in the fee.
Projects Abroad is a volunteer abroad organization that gives its participants an opportunity to gain and share experience and skills in numerous countries of the world. The organization has many projects in Ghana, West Africa.
Volunteering areas covered are so large that anyone will find something suitable for him. The participants will live with host families and will need to adapt to their routine life and be ready for electricity and water supply failures.
The project’s duration varies from two weeks to several years (the cost is about $240 for two weeks) and may easily be added to summer school programs for high school students or college students, or anyone who is willing to contribute to the world’s development and betterment of life conditions of those less fortunate.
Projects Abroad offers volunteerism in other countries of Africa as well–South Africa, Morocco, Tanzania, Togo, Senegal, Ethiopia and Mozambique.
The projects are open for everybody, notwithstanding age and sex, education and skills. The price varies depending on the country and volunteering time, but the cost includes food and accommodation, medical insurance, visa support, airport pick up and drop off and 24 hour support both from in-country staff and US/Canada staff.
By helping those in need with one of the volunteer summer programs you will help yourself as well. Volunteerism gives you the chance to define your opportunities, better understand your interests, know the weak and strong sides of your character and, most importantly, make your small contribution to the development of the world.
