Bond Issue Is Approved For Sachem Schools
Residents in Sachem, one of the largest school districts in the state of New York, have approved a $33.1 million issue for repairs, renovations and enhancement plans in each of Sachem’s 18 schools. The voting took place at all district elementary schools on Tuesday.
Newsday.com reports that the cap will rise to four percent for the 2008-09 school year.
Another $3.9 million would be slated for Sachem High School East. In the middle schools, $5.1 million would go to Samoset, $1.9 million to Seneca, $602,000 to Sagamore and $118,000 to Sequoya. The 12 elementary schools would each receive between $2.3 million and $120,000.
According to The New York Times, the project includes replacing heaters, floors and upgrading lifters.
Sachem, the Island’s second-largest district, with 15,000 students, can now move forward with a project that includes replacement of heaters, floors, rooftops and windows, upgrading of lighting, new bleachers, playground enhancements and asbestos removal. The largest chunk, of more than $11 million, is for Sachem High School North, in Lake Ronkonkoma, for all-turf athletic fields, roof replacement and new windows for the front of the building.
The paper also quotes Sachem’s assistant superintendent for business Bruce H. Singer, calling the vote “a no-brainer.”
“If we can accomplish $33 million in projects and it will cost the taxpayers nothing, why would anyone vote no?” he said.
