Oklahoma University Gets $100 Million Donation
Boone Pickens has given Oklahoma State University a donation of $100 million, which is so far the largest gift given to the university to develop its academic programs. This is reportedly the second donation that Pickens presented to this university; he already donated $400 million several years ago.
Pickens earned a degree in geology from Oklahoma State in 1951 and is the founder and chairman of BP Capital Management.
The New York Times reports that the law detects gifts presented to the university, which are to be matched by the state.
Mr. Pickens, an alumnus of Oklahoma State and the founder and chairman of BP Capital Management, has already donated about $400 million to the university. Oklahoma law dictates that gifts like Mr. Pickens’s, given for endowed chairs, are to be matched by the state, bringing the amount the university will receive to $200 million.
Chronicle.com quotes Pickens commenting on the importance of his given donation.
“My goal has always been to make OSU more competitive in all areas. I believe my donations to athletics and now this gift to academics will do just that.” Pickens said.
