Tennessee Eases GPA Rules On Lottery Scholarships
The State legislature has agreed on a plan to ease GPA rules for Tennessee’s lottery-funded scholarships. The new plan will extend the 2.75 requirement of GPA.
The Education Week reports that currently students who receive Tennessee Lottery Scholarships are required to have GPA of 2.75 for freshman year, and to make a progress reaching to 3.00 by their sophomore year.
In an effort to prevent more recipients of Tennessee’s lottery-funded scholarships from losing their awards because their grades fell short of the program’s minimum requirements, the legislature has agreed to a plan to ease the rules.
According to Lottery Scholarships, not all states participate, but it’s quite possible that more will jump on the bandwagon. Only Tennessee, New Mexico, Maryland, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, New York, South Carolina, Missouri and West Virginia states are among those sponsoring lottery-funded scholarship programs.
State eligibility requirements for lottery-funded scholarships vary greatly from state to state, with some states having stricter regulations than others. Usually, students who apply for lottery-funded state scholarships must at the very least attend a high school and college within the state of the program.
The new plan has been approved by lawmakers in their legislative session and is awaiting Democratic Gov. Phil Bredesen’s expected signature.
