Third-World Women Learn Business
Goldman Sachs & Company plans to donate $100 million to universities in Middle East and Africa in order to teach Business and Management courses to more than 10,000 women. The program will last five years and include courses benefiting women and their communities.
The New York Times reports that Goldman has spent more than a year on developing this plan.
Its partners in the endeavor range from the Pan-African University in Lagos, Nigeria, to the Thunderbird School of Global Management in Arizona. Its focus on women mirrors the efforts of many nonprofit groups that are working to give women financial tools in the belief that it will benefit their communities.
The magazine also quotes Lloyd C. Blankfein, the chairman and chief executive of Goldman Sachs & Company, commenting on the company’s decision.
“No country will ever achieve its full potential if half of its talent pool is stymied or underrepresented.”
According to the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, Goldman Sachs & Company’s donation is one of the largest that has been proposed since the year of 2000.
