American Universities Export Internationally

American Universities Export InternationallyThe American System of Education is fast becoming an export commodity in the world education system. Nowadays more and more American universities are opening their campuses in different countries, and especially in the countries of the Middle East.

According to America.gov, American universities opened in Middle East help deepen the understanding between East and West.

The American University in Cairo, American University of Beirut, Lebanese American University and American University of Sharjah — with a combined enrollment of more than 22,000 students — have thrived and are valued and respected throughout the Arab world, the presidents of those institutions say.

The New York Times reports that students in oil-rich Middle East are among those who can get American education in their own countries without going to the U.S.

At Education City in Doha, Qatar’s capital, they can study medicine at Weill Medical College of Cornell University, international affairs at Georgetown, computer science and business at Carnegie Mellon, fine arts at Virginia Commonwealth, engineering at Texas A&M, and soon, journalism at Northwestern.

The University of Washington offers short courses to citizens of the Emirates, mostly women. The paper also quotes Marisa Nickle, the responsible for one of the university’s program, commenting on the possibilities of the program.

“We’re very eager to have a presence here. In the gulf, it’s not what’s here now, it’s what’s coming. Everybody’s on the way.”
