NACOL Online Education Standards
As virtual education and online learning are gaining popularity in American Higher Education, the North American Council for Online Learning (NACOL) has developed a set of standards for online teaching and learning.
Education Week reports that “topics in the standards include teacher prerequisites such as state licensure, subject-area proficiency, technology skills, and experience as a student in online courses.”
They also cover practices such as planning and using strategies for active learning and collaboration; complying with intellectual-property rights; interacting with students and parents; addressing special needs; and using a range of appropriate evaluations, assessments, and data.
According to iNACOL’s official site, its new publication is designed to provide state online programs and other educational organizations with a set of guidelines. The site also quotes Susan Patrick, the President and CEO of NACOL, commenting on the importance of these new guidelines.
“Our overall goal is to ensure that every student has access to the highest quality education available today. Online teaching standards help ensure the quality and consistency of instruction in K-12 online education. The National Standards for Quality Online Teaching offers an important tool to help teachers, schools, and parents across the nation evaluate quality and implement best practices.”
