The collectors regard the book as a true first edition, if it really is a first edition and first printing.
To identify the edition of your book, open the Copyright and Dedication Page. There you will find a line of numbers. The lowest number in the line represents the number of the edition. If the lowest number is 1, then the book is first edition.
Some first edition books don’t have the string of numbers. Sometimes the publishers state that the book is first edition, but in fact it is only the first by their publishing company.
Some publishers use different ways to state that the book is the first edition.
Read the author’s bibliography online to find out when and where the book was first edited and first printed. If the first edition was published in different countries at the same time, the collectors will prefer the one which was published in the author’s home country.
The more information you have about the author’s bibliography and the book’s history, the easier it will be for you to identify it’s edition and value.
