The Benefits Of Differentiated Instruction

The Benefits Of Differentiated InstructionDifferentiated Instruction refers to a method of teaching and learning in which the lesson plans are tailor-made to fit individual students according to their abilities and needs. This type of teaching takes into account the student’s talents, background, learning style and interests. Since no two students are exactly alike, there are many benefits to this type of teaching.

Differential learning allows each student to move along at his/her own pace. It is a fact that in any classroom each student will have different abilities, based whether these abilities are on intelligence or experience. Expected to perform at the same level, many students will become frustrated. This can occur in two ways. Some students will become exasperated in trying to keep up with other students and other students will not feel challenged enough. Teachers should not expect struggling learners to perform the same as those whose learning is easier. At the same time, those who are at a higher level of learning should be able to move along at an accelerated pace.

Another advantage to differential instruction is that students can learn and study “their way”. Some students are visual learners, others are auditory learners, and some learn best with a “hands-on” type of approach. With differential instruction the teacher can adapt the curriculum to accommodate different learning styles. When a student is able to utilize his particular learning style, it greatly increases his potential.

Differential learning can lead to increased self-confidence and better attitudes. Since the lesson plans are individualized, a student’s interests are considered. When students are able to make a connection between study materials and their own interests, they can begin to see the value of learning. In addition, when a teacher understands an individual’s abilities, she can challenge that student to excel beyond what the student may think he can do without pushing him over the edge. This can be a great self-confidence booster. All this leads to better attitudes–and attitude is everything when it comes to learning.

Students who are in an environment where the teacher understands learning differences will have more respect for one another. They can learn to work together as a team recognizing that, although they are not alike, they each have something to contribute.

Differentiated instruction may not be as traditional as other methods of instruction, but it has many advantages. Recognizing that each student is unique, and allowing them to use their own strategies to learn; teaching them to set realistic goals for themselves; and encouraging them to work together, rather than against each other, can all contribute to a more positive learning environment and ultimately a successful future.
