Develop Your Child's Reading Skills

Develop Your Child's Reading SkillsAs a parent you should help your child in developing  effective reading skills.

How can you contribute to developing reading skills in your child? It won’t be a difficult task if you follow the strategies mentioned below.

  • Choose a book that will be of interest to your child. For instance it may be a funny story or a fairy-tale.
  • First, read it to him  loudly and clearly pronounce the words as phonetics is an important part of developing reading skills.
  • Then ask him to read. It’s advisable to ask some questions while reading in order to see if he catches the main idea of the text well.
  • When reading, your child needs to understand the meaning of the words as well. It will be easier for him to read words he knows. So you should consider enriching his vocabulary and teach him to use a dictionary.
  • Ask him to write down unfamiliar words in order to remember well. Developing writing skills will definitely contribute to improving reading skills.
  • If there are some illustrations in the book tell your child to pay attention to them as this way he may easily catch the main idea. So paying attention to the illustrations makes reading easier by predicting future ideas.
  • If your child still faces difficulty in reading then re-reading and repeating is necessary.
  • Watching some educational TV programs is advisable as it helps expand his horizons.
  • Be patient and teach your child with great pleasure. Remember that you can improve your child’s reading skills by being a good example for him.
  • Finally, don’t forget to praise your child as praising is a psychological side of  education that stimulates better work.
