Teaching Dyslexic Children
Dyslexia has nothing to do with “lack of intelligence.” On the contrary, dyslexic people often prove to be very talented.
Dyslexic children have difficulty in processing words and sounds while reading, pronouncing and writing. So teachers and parents must do everything to help them overcome that barrier.
I am a teacher and have a pupil, who confuses the position of the letters and words, for instance, she says “deb” instead of “bed,” “when” instead of “then” and so on. Soon I realized she might have some dyslexic problems
Now I am working with her in developing reading skills and spelling skills. She also needs to improve writing skills.
When I did some research, I realized that the method called “multisensory” is the most fruitful one for dyslexic child teaching. This method encompasses pleasure with productivity. You use not only lectures, but also interesting visual materials, facial expressions and gestures to keep the child concentrating and involved.
I try to make each new word exceptional, to relate that word with something she is interested in. For example, she likes dancing, and I relate the words of musical instruments to each type of dance. If she still does not remember the word, I sometimes imitate the sound of the instrument, which is a real fun for me as well.
I also try to “praise” the words, assuring her how beautiful they are. I tell her that she has to repeat them a lot so that her face becomes even more beautiful when she utters them.
Whenever she sees that the text is long, she becomes stubborn and has no desire to read it. That’s why we start to read the text part by part and discuss each chapter, so that she becomes curious. And I tell her how proud everybody will be of her, and how good she will feel when she gets a high grade.
So, I try to be a friend with any child and make the class a place where a dyslexic child would be eager to go.
