Express Yourself In Business Writing
Nowadays having good business writing skills is nearly as important as being a professional in your sphere. Business writing skills are necessary for writing reports, resumes, business letters and of course, application letters.
When you apply for a job, the first thing your employer sees is your application letter. If it is written in a poor manner, with mistakes and uncertain ideas, you will probably never be invited to an interview.
Of course, if you search the web you will find numberless application letter samples and create your own letter by rewriting them. But this is not the right thing to do, because in that case your letter won’t really express who you are and will be poor and uncertain. If you write your own letter in your own way, using certain business writing skills, you will prove yourself as a professional and draw the readers’ attention and people will want to meet you.
So, what does it take to write a killing application letter? Check out the following tips, which are sure to help you.
- First of all, when you sit down to write an application letter, think of why you are writing it. Make the main point of your letter clear to the reader. Just start with the reason why you are writing.
- Remember about the people who are going to read your letter. This is like marketing: think of what they want to get from you, what will make them interested, what are their expectations. Write about the benefits the employers will get if they hire you. But of course, everything you write must be truthful.
- Think of the questions that may arise within the reader, and give answers to them.
- How would you speak, if the person you are writing to was standing in front of you? Write just the same way. Don’t write abstractly.
- Write your letter in a plain style, keep it simple. Don’t use fancy words and long tangled sentences and people will appreciate it. Keep it short, don’t use words which don’t add meaning to your letter. You need really few words to express your main idea, and that is what exactly the reader wants.
- Also write in active voice, it is more natural and people will understand you better that way.
- When you have leisure time, write application letters to yourself. Then read them and decide, are you interested in that person? Do you like him? Did he answer all your questions? This exercise is fun, and it will help you improve your business writing skills.
